Department of Chemistry

The department of chemistry, Govt college malappuram had a humble beginning in 1978 when considering the educational backwardness of the area and In response to the clamour from the general public for science courses Pre Degree course with physics chemistry and Biology was started in the college. Sri.pk Radhakrishnan was the first to be at the head of the department Sri.P moideen Kutty charges the head of the department in June 1979, P V Ravindran joined the department on 11-10-1979. the first batch of students have appear for the university examination that year the college didn’t have at that time the infrastructure to train students in Science practicals, so they had their science practical classes at a Government Arts and Science College Calicut. during the next academic year physics, chemistry, biology Laboratories were set up in the present building. Sri. P Muhammed Shafi joined the faculty in June 1980. Pre Degree course with physics, chemistry and mathematics as optional subjects was started during 1982 to 83 and Sri. A. Muhammad joined the department. Chemistry began to be taught as a subject at degree level with the starting of BSc degree course in 1994 with physics as main subject and mathematics and Chemistry as subsidiary subjects. BSc course with chemistry as main subject was started during 1999 – 2000 .As per the guidelines of the University Grants Commission for Vocationalisation of degree courses, food Science and quality control was introduced as a subsidiary subject for the course, mathematics being the compulsory subsidiary

Dr. P Muhammad Shafi, Dr. C P Arvindakshan and Sri. A Muhammad headed the department during different periods. Shri V Krishnan served the department from 1990 to 2001 & Smt. Annette Fernandes during 1992 to 93. Dr. Geetha numbiar joined the institution in December 2001 in the vacancy of Sri Krishnan. Sri. A.Muhammad retired from service on 31- 5- 2005 and Sri. Moideenkutty retired on 31-5- 2008. Dr. Sreesha Sasi joined the institution in June 2006 and transfered to Mani Mala kunnu college in September 2009. Dr Ramni KC Worked from 30-10-2008 to 03/06/2009 and Smt. Usha. M from 17- 12 -2010 to 19- 6- 2012 .Dr Muneer CP Worked from June 2009 to June 2015 and in FIP from July 2010 to July 2013. Smt. Ummu Habeeba joined the department in June 2012 and Dr Ajitha MT from June 2012 to January 2013.Linta Mary Jose from from February 2013 to June 2014. Ramlath K T joined in October 2014 and transferred in June 2019. Dr Surendran Parambadath joined in 2019 June & served up to 2020 September. Dr. Vanaja from October 2020 to November 2020 Dr. Ramya. K joined the department in October 2020 in the vacancy of Vanaja.  Complimentary subject food science and quality control changed into Physics in 2020 admission .

The vision of the department is to provide quality oriented education that may bring out the potentiality of the students. Let science education help in the making of a society free from superstitions that hinder progress.

Mission

To promote, inspire and nurture the fundamentals of chemistry through quality science education to the youth of this educationally backward area and to instill in them a scientific temperament and to equip them to look at things from a wider perspective of science.
