The Department of Statistics was established in the year 2007, with Statistics being offered as a core course to MA Economics. The PG Course in Statistics started in 2021, and now the department offers Statistics courses for M. Sc. Statistics and M. A. Economics. The major focus of the department is on Applied Algorithms, Statistical Techniques in Data Mining, Analysis of Multi-type and Big Data, Statistical Modelling, and Non-parametric Statistics.
Our mission is to provide excellent teaching and equip students with the necessary skills and analytical tools to become successful statisticians and professional data scientists. We are dedicated to imparting knowledge and fostering a learning environment that promotes academic and professional growth.

M.Sc. Statistics
The MSc Statistics program started in 2021. It is a postgraduate degree program that focuses on the mathematical and computational aspects of statistical theory and practice. The program is designed to train students in advanced statistical techniques and methods needed to analyze and interpret data in various fields, including business, finance, healthcare, social sciences, and more.
The program is divided into four semesters and covers topics such as probability theory, statistical inference, data analysis, regression analysis, Bayesian statistics, applied algorithms, statistical techniques in data mining, analysis of multi-type and big data, statistical modelling, and non-parametric statistics. Students will also learn to use statistical software packages such as R, Python, among others.
Career prospects
The MSc Statistics program is suitable for students with a strong mathematical background and an interest in data analysis and statistics. Graduates of the program can pursue careers as statisticians, data analysts, data scientists, quantitative analysts, or researchers in various industries such as finance, healthcare, technology, and more. The program can also serve as a foundation for further studies in related fields such as biostatistics, econometrics, or data science
Admission Process
Admission to the MSc programme starts in August every year. All candidates seeking admission to PG programmes must register through the Centralised Admission Process (CAP) of the University of Calicut. Admissions to programmes that come under the purview of Centralised Allotment are conducted through Centralised Allotment. Selection/allotment of a candidate will be based on the index mark, priority given by the candidate, and availability of seats. The sanctioned strength for the MSc Statistics programme at this college is 10.
The eligibility criteria for admission
Under the Mark System: Candidates should have at least 50% marks in Statistics/Applied Statistics (Main)/Mathematics & Statistics (Double Main)/Mathematics (Main) with Statistics as one of the subsidiaries in the B.Sc. Degree of this University or an equivalent. OBC/OEC candidates are eligible for relaxation up to 5%. SC/ST candidates need only to pass.
Under the Grade System: Candidates should have a BSc Statistics/Applied Statistics(Main)/Mathematics & Statistics (Double Main)/Mathematics (Core) degree with Statistics as complementary in the B.Sc. Degree of this University or an equivalent degree with an overall CGPA, at least equivalent to 50%. OBC/OEC candidates are eligible for relaxation up to 5%. SC/ST candidates need only to pass.
