M.A. Economics
MA Programme in Economics was started in the year 1999. Now it is a two-year programme comprising four semesters of six months. The total number of seats in MA economics in the academic year 2022-23 was Twenty plus a Twenty percent marginal increase (Four seats) and three additional seats to accommodate students belonging to Sports, Differently abled, and Lakshadweep categories. The elective offered in the programme are “Banking: Theory and Practice” in the Third Semester, Business Economics and Research Methodology and Computer Application in the last semester. The students must undergo two audit courses each inthe first two semesters of the Programme.
Career Prospects
M A program in Economics will equip the students to address challenging economic problems and provide them with excellent tools to pursue careers in both the public and private sector.As a professional economist, a student with post graduate in Economics can be involved in researching and analyzing economic data, issues and trends. MA Economics postgraduates can apply for and get employed in Civil services –IAS, IES, IFS as well as KAS. They can also apply for various central Government departments through SSCs as well as various Kerala government posts through Kerala PSC exams such as Assistant Professor, Teacher in Higher secondary schools, Research Assistant, Department of Economics & Statistics, Census Department, Statistical investigator, Research Assistant, Research Officer etc.Post Graduate in Economics can also seek jobs in International organizations like the United Nations and its specialized agencies, the World Bank, the International Monetary Fund and the foreign service, including embassies and consulates abroad. Other job roles available to students after graduation in MA Economics are : Associate Researcher, Trade Analyst, Stock Broker, Marketing Manager, Branch Retail Manager, Bank Manager, Data Analyst, Director of Operations, Financial Analyst, Digital Marketer, Project Manager Data analysts in start-ups or tech firms, Foreign Exchange Analyst,Risk manager, GST officer/ Practitioner, etc. After completing M A Economics they can seek various posts in banks – public and private, local and national government, insurance companies, think-tanks, large multinational companies, financial consultancies, accountancy firms and local authorities. A sound awareness of current affairs and economic contexts is essential in these roles.
MA Economics postgraduates can opt for higher studies once they complete their postgraduate studies. Depending on their MA Economics specialization afterm completing the course MA Economics postgraduates can pursue Ph.D, MBA, PG Diplomaand Data science, Post Graduate Certificate in Management.
Admission Process
Admission to the MA Programme in Economics will start in the month of July every year. In order to apply for the programme the candidate has to register in the Calicut University Centralised Admission Process.
Eligibility
Under Mark System — BA Degree of this University with Economics/Foreign Trade/Development Economics (Main) or equivalent degree with at least 45% marks for Part III (excluding subsidiaries).OR B Sc Degree of this University with Statistics/Mathematics (Main) or equivalent degree with at least 70% marks for Part III (excluding subsidiaries).OBC/OEC candidates are eligible to relaxation up to 5%. SC/ST candidates need only to get a pass.
Under Grade System — BA Degree of this University with Economics/Foreign Trade/Development Economics (Main) or equivalent degree with Overall CGPA, at least equivalent to 50%, OR BSc Degree of this University with Statistics/Mathematics (Main) or equivalent degree with equivalent grade to 70 %. OBC/OEC candidates are eligible to relaxation up to 5%. SC/ST candidates need only to get a pass.
